Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.

Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

There are spoilers…you have been warned 🙂

The book opens in 1998 with Nicki searching the internet looking up her old high school boyfriends and then her friends share about seeing one them on trip overseas.  It isn’t long before we are taken back to the bitter sweet journey of Nicki and Adam’s relationship. It starts the summer of her junior year when her sister was killed in a car accident. Nicki and her mom also received severe injuries. Nicki carries both emotional and physical scars from the accident.

As she begins to get friendly with Adam she finds herself crushing on him even though he has a girlfriend.  As time progresses Nicki begins to overcome her crush a little and even momentarily has a hook up with Adam’s cousin David while he is in town.  Adam’s sister Sylvia and Nicki bond and things again get iffy when it comes to her feelings about Adam.  Finally, Adam is free and they begin seeing each other. They fall hard and deep for each other.  At this point my mind starts going back to the year 1992 and bringing back memories of high school romances for me. I feel my heart flutter with those intense feelings of puppy love.

The big problem is Adam is moving back to Britain at the end of the school year.  Nicki gives her virginity to Adam and they give their hearts to one another. His grandfather dies and on a trip back to Britain for the funeral he destroys what should have been their last months of happiness by making the typical teenage mistakes. Could it have been avoided had she not already begun pushing him away? Who knows but what we do know is that Nicki is emotionally damaged from the loss of her sister Lauren and it was her way to protect herself from the loss of Adam.

She spends her time being miserable because he broke her heart yet she still loves him. A mutual friend, Tom and Adam’s sister, Sylvia both talk to Nicki about the way things were ended between her and Adam. After their intervention she finally agrees to talk with him and they spend their last few weeks together, mostly as friends. On their last day together they reconnect on every level and he spends the night with her. Tears fall as he leaves and she yells after him, “I’ll always love you Adam remember that” and through his own tears he tells her “I will”. Yeah, do hear that? That’s my heart breaking. Yup, stick a fork in me…I am done 🙁

The epilogue takes us to 2009. Adam is in the crowd at the White House as a reporter and Nicki is introduced as the deputy press secretary. Adam takes in ever inch of her and recalls all that he loves about her but hating the hurt he still sees in her eyes. When they see each other face to face she stares at him blankly. He is devastated but then, as she is about to exit the room, she turns back and gives him a smile. He knows that Nicki still feels something for him and that is enough for him. So excited to read book 2 and Find out what happens in Nikki and Adam’s story.
