Fantasy is not a genre that I often reach for but I genuinely like K.A. Linde’s writing. The Affiliate, was an intriguing story of fantasy, magic, and romance. Honestly, I wanted love this book, I wanted to be completely swept in the story. There were somethings that were lacking for me but even though this book was somewhat of my comfort zone I did enjoy it.
“Everything in her world had an answer. She would find it.
The story opens with seventeen Cyrene on the day of her Presenting. She has always dreamed of working as an Affiliate to the royal court and when she is given the coveted position as the Queen’s Affiliate she is ecstatic. Even though she is truly happy with her position, it’s not all the she hoped for. She’s garnered the unwanted attention of Prince Kael and the unanticipated romantic affections from King Edric. This only makes the Queen dislike her more. Cyrene has always dreamed of traveling world but the Queen gives her nothing but busy work that keeps her tied to the castle.
“For a moment, while locked in the King’s gaze, all she saw was the here and now. There was neither time nor distance between them. It was just a pull as if they would be tethered together from this point on.”
As Cyrene begins to deal with the new changes in her life, she also begins to discover new and strange things about herself. Their is something mysterious that are happening to her and strange things happening in the castle. The inexplicable and intense connection she has to the King is something that continues to grow and deepen. She also a strange connection to a mysterious book that is part of their country’s past. Soon strange things begin to happen in the castle. Members of the High Order and Affiliates are attacked and it puts everyone in dangers. Cyrene desperately wants to find the answers about the tragedies that are happening in the castle.
“She has this pull. When I’m with her, the throne slips away, and I’m just a man with a beautiful woman. It both intrigues and terrifies me.”
Honestly I liked Cyrene. She was the typical K.A. heroine. She was feisty and brave but sometimes she could be a bit hard to like. The book wasn’t heavy in romance but you could still sense the connection between Edric and Cyrene. For the most part I liked Edric. He was handsome, powerful, and yet he was kind. At the same time I have my reservations about him. I also felt the opposite way about the Prince but he did grow on me throughout the book. There were a few parts of the story that threw me off a bit and I have many questions. Yet, the story kept me reading until the end. I did like the book enough and I’m excited to see how the story unfolds in the next installment.
“What are you going to do? You have something in mind. I can see it.”
“Yes, I have a plan.”
“Could we get in trouble?”
“Is it worth it?”
“Cyrene,” he whispered.
Their breaths mingled in the space between them. They were so close that their noses almost brushed. His hands came around her waist, and then his lips fell lightly, ever so lightly, on her own.
Her eyes fluttered closed, and the taste of him consumed her. His lips were tender and appreciative, covering her mouth and perfectly fitting against her. He drew her against his broad chest, and she circled her arms around his neck.
The kiss intensified. Their mouths moved in time together, leaving her head dizzy. She wobbled on the tips of her toes as he held her in place. He started walking her backward into the bedroom. His hands dug into her dress, bunching the material around her waist. Her knees hit the footboard of the massive bed, and she could barely breathe as she realized where this was all going.
And still, she didn’t stop. The spark had turned into an inferno, flames engulfing them, and they were trapped in the blaze that was their passion.
His hands slid up to cup her face before easing into her hair. “Cyrene,” he murmured between kisses, “stay with me.”
