It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.
But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times—and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change. I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.
So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.
Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.
WOW!! Just Friends was infuriating, drama filled, over the top, teen angst, and yet I could not get enough of it. I don’t think I have ever read a book so quickly before, but I could not put this book down. This story is 90210 (the 90s version) meets One Tree Hill. Normally this isn’t the type of book that I would gravitate too but my goodness, Monica Murphy wrote an intriguing story.
The story centers on Olivia and her best friends Dustin and Emily. After spending the summer away at her father’s house, Olivia has come back home and nothing feels the same. Before she left for the summer vacation, her and Dustin had been dancing around a new-found attraction for each other. Dustin wants a real relationship with her. Olivia loves the way he makes her feel, but she is adamant that she wants to remain “just friends”.
Olivia even notices that Em has changed during summer. She is drinking, smoking, and partying even more than usual. Then there is Ryan, the new boy that Em has been spending time with. He’s bold, brash, and has an ego and confidence the size of Texas. Even though he an Em have been spending hooking up with each other, he is attracted to Olivia from the first time the meet. Ryan isn’t one to hold back and he makes his feelings known. The hormones and the secrets they each were keeping, helped fuel the drama.
I honestly don’t think I liked any of these characters (except for Amanda, she rocked, and dare I say Tuttle). They all were selfish, entitled, immature brats. Yes, I know they were seventeen but goodness the frustrated me to no end. They were supposed to be the best of friends but they are each were keeping secrets that hurt one another.
This story was a fast paced, plot heavy book. It was crazy and it frustrated me (yes I know I’ve said that more than once). I almost wanted to stop reading but I was invested. I need to see how this story plays out. I hope these characters can redeem themselves. So bring on the next book Ms. Murphy, I’m ready for it.
