Dr. Phoenix Reid isn't who she seems...

Everyone knows a phoenix rises from the ashes. What they don't talk about are the people she drags with her into the fire.

I thought one hot night with Max Hallowell was harmless. I never expected it would force me to face my past or bring back the man who swore he'd never let me go. Now Max wants to help me. Wants to save me. But if I let him, he'll be destroyed. I can already smell the flames.

A woman with a secret past. A man determined to protect her. A dangerous passion that could cost them both everything.

Playing with Fire is the first in a new series of standalone novels featuring the New Hope characters Lexi Ryan fans have come to love. While you wait for Nix and Max's story, explore Love Unbound, the collection of books set in Lexi's New Hope world.

*Note: Each series can be read on its own, but for the chronology purists, the reading order is below.

“I will never let you go. You’re my Phoenix. I need you. Without you, I’m as good as the ash under the flame.

I absolutely love Lexi Ryan’s Thompson sisters. So I was excited that this series went back to the town of New Hope and we were going to see some familiar characters. Dr. Phoenix Reid, has been friend’s with the Thompson sisters since she moved to New Hope a few years ago. She’s smart, sweet, sexy, and she doesn’t like to share much of her personal life. No one knows that’s she running from a past that haunts her. Thirteen years ago, she left her mother and sister and fled a place they called Camelot. Now she lives in fear of that past and her ex-boyfriend Patrick. Nix’s past has come in the way of her happiness before and she doesn’t want it to happen again but when she end’s up sharing one night with Maximilian Holloway, it makes her want so much more with him.

“Everyone needs someone. Some us are just better at hiding lying to ourselves than others.”

Max was the kind of guy that wore his heart on his sleeve. He’s been heartbroken before but he hasn’t let that stop him from seeking a new relationship. Max was sweet, confident, and gorgeous. He was a single dad to his little girl Chloe and he was an all around good guy. He was truly sweet to Nix and even though it’s been months since they shared that one night together, he still had feelings for her. Nix tried to keep their relationship platonic but their moments together we’re so sexy and sweet. When Nix’s past starts to haunt her again, Max was more than willing to offer her safety and comfort.

“There’s something about the way she kisses that makes me want to give her everything she needs.”

What I didn’t care for:
I understood Nix was scared. I understood that her past had left her fearful and hesitant of her relationships and bringing anyone into her future. What down right frustrated me was her naivety. Despite her smarts and how Max proved himself time and time again, she just could not comprehend that he really wanted to be with her. I felt bad for him. Part of me wanted to tell him move on and the other half wanted me to tell him to fight for her. The constant back and forth made it hard for me to feel more of their connection.

What I liked about this story:
I enjoyed the little elements of suspense and seeing the tragic pieces of Nix’s past. Her past was disturbing and I felt so bad for her. I really liked how sweet Max protective he could be. The physical connection between them truly sexy. I really wanted to see them both happy. I enjoyed seeing some familiar characters and I can’t wait to see their friend Cade’s story.
