Mari and Amanda’s Reviews
It’s dark and twisted, but it’s a mob story. The dynamics are intense and the shocks keep rolling but damn I love Emma she’s strong and vulnerable all at the same time but the changes and the hardness you can virtually feel and see through the page. Carter is just everything you’d expect from a mobster what you don’t expect is the intense way he is with Emma and his perspective is key to bringing the whole story together.
This book gets 5 stars just because Tijan wrote it…hehe…not really but I do give special preference. I see her name I know I am getting to read a kick ass story. Carter Reed did not disappoint. One thing I was looking forward to…this story was a standalone not a series as is normal for Tijan. It was also a different type of story than what she normally writes.
Amanda Final Say:
Their past wasn’t touched on a lot but there was one memory that explains their special relationship, at least to me, where Emma sat with Carter through the night after he’d been beaten, holding hands the entire time. Not everyone would do that. Also the fact that she tracked him through the media and knew every bit of information the media said about him and the fact that they know each other’s quirks and habits say they were close before they went separate ways.
There wasn’t a load of character development in the usual sense of a past laid out from the beginning, a prior relationship established and outlined from the start, that information is embedded in the story itself in memories and reading between the lines of their actions in the memories and in the present. When you take someone’s life it changes you and the character development occurs over the progression of the plot line. At the beginning Emma was tortured but still soft and impressionable but with a fighting spirit, as the plot moves on you see her struggle with what she did, the memories of her brothers demise and her carnal reaction to Carter which develops into deeper feelings as she hardens to the world that opened to her when she requested Carter’s help. At the beginning there was no way she would’ve accepted and participated in the things that happened at the end if she hadn’t changed. At the same time she learned that sometimes letting people in can help. Carter was hard as steel and scary to boot, at the beginning, but as his life is revealed and the extent he goes to, and has gone to, to protect the ones he cares about he becomes more endearing and not so hardened, to me.
There are times when things don’t make sense but then the POV changes and you’re like
‘Oh, I see now’. Then there is times when you’re just shocked because you weren’t expecting something to happen or the person who did it.
Personally I loved it. This is a new experience from Tijan and I think people are either going to love it or not like it at all.
Mari Final Say:
We meet Emma and the drama and angst is there from the very beginning. She walks into her home to find her roommate being raped by a man, a man who is supposed to be the roommate’s boyfriend. He also happens to be connected to a crime family. Emma does the only thing she can do and somehow knowing it’s the only option…she kills the man. Now she is in some deep shit because she just killed the son of a crime boss. Ah but she is lucky because she knows her brother’s best friend joined a rival crime family and is a man who is feared. The kicker being that her brother was killed by the same family now hunting her. Meet Carter Reed.
Tijan has a way of creating sexual tension between her lead characters from the beginning and it’s there from the moment Emma and Carter reconnect. Emma manages to explain to Carter what has happened and he tells her the only way he can help is for her to move me in with him. Then fun begins 🙂 okay maybe not fun but the real story starts now. There is plenty of drama to be had. Emma suffers betrayal, she suffers some major sexual frustration and then it all boils to head making Emma turn badass. I mean absolute BADASS! I was mentally fist pumping at this point. I am honored to speak to Tijan on occasion and I told her this was probably one of the strongest female leads she has ever created. Carter is just wow! The things he does to protect Emma and to show just how much she means to him. Let me tell you Carter will leave you swooning at the end of this book. All in all…Emma and Carter are a perfect match and deserve a happy ever after at the end of this story…do they get it? Im not telling you will have to read the book to find out. Go one click it now!
About the Author
“Tell me what happened.” His plea was so soft.I broke. This wasn’t the stranger anymore. This was Carter, the boy I had grown up with. I flung my arms around him and pulled him down. Instead of fighting, I clung to him now.He wrapped his arms around me and rolled to his side. He patted my back and tucked his head into the crook of my neck and shoulder. I felt his lips brush there as he repeated, “You have to tell me. I won’t hurt you. I will protect you.”A shudder went through my body. At last. Those were the words I was desperate for. He moved his hands, one sliding down to my hip and the other cradling the back of my head, he pressed into me. The last of my reserve fled then. A gasp escaped me and I pressed against him. I needed him.“Emma.”Shame flooded me. He knew. What kind of person was I? Fighting, running away, and then starting to tremble in his arms? His hand started to caress my hip. His fingers slid underneath my shirt and moved under my pants’ waistband. He held me there, his hand splayed out. I tried to resist, but I wanted to wind my legs around him. I wanted to pull him on top of me and feel his hand between my legs. But I didn’t do anything. I lay there, still, as my heart pounded inside of me. He could feel the beat against him. The thumping drowned everything else out.He pressed a soft kiss to my forehead and raised himself up again. He looked down at me. The plea in his eyes was still there. As he brushed some of my hair from my forehead, he asked, “Do you not trust me?”I nodded. “I’m scared of you.”A small grin appeared at the corners of his mouth. “You are?”“I don’t know who you are anymore.” I couldn’t believe I was admitting any of that, but I needed to trust someone. I had to if I was going to survive what I had done. Feeling a little bit brave, I touched his chest. My hand spread out like his was on my back. His heart was steady. I murmured, “I know who you are. I know you’re the Cold Killer. I know what you did for AJ.” A tear slipped from the corner of my eye. It fell unheeded. “I always wanted to thank you for that.”
