The tables have turned. Now I have the power—and it’s his turn to beg…

Everyone wants to be me.

Maybe it’s the sway of my skirt or the way I flip my hair, but I don’t care. Even though their attention is the last thing I crave, I just can’t stop. I dominate the track, the speed rattles my bones, and the wind and the crowd screams my name.

I’m her. The girl driver. The queen of the race. And I’m surviving—something he thought I’d never do.

They all talk about him. Did you see Jared Trent on T.V? What did you think of his last race, Tate? When is he coming back to town, Tate?

But I refuse to care too much. Because when Jared does come home, I won’t be here.

Tatum Brandt is gone. I’m someone new.

“I exist as I am, that is enough.”

You know that feeling when you’re anxiously awaiting the next book in your favorite series? The anticipation, the excitement, and you can only hope that it is just as good as imagining it to be?! Sigh, yeah I had that feeling waiting for Aflame and it was even better than I anticipated. I am absolutely happy with this book. Aflame was filled with palpable emotion, heartache, angst, and love.

“I didn’t know where I’d end up, what I’d be doing, but she was mine. Always.”

I don’t want to rehash too much of the story because you have to experience it. It’s been two years since Jared and Tate were last together. Two years, since Jared decided to leave. They’ve been together for half their lives and even though their roles in each other’s lives have changed over the years, they always had one another. They love each other to the core, they depended on one another, but Jared needed to find himself. He wanted to gain confidence in himself and become the man he not only needed to be, but the man we thought was worthy of Tate.

Jared finally found the success he dreamed of and then confidence he needed. He hasn’t been home since he left, but his mom finally convinces him to come back home for a family event. But coming home means seeing Tate and that scares Jared. He doesn’t know what to expect with her. He broke her heart, she’s moved on, he’s tried to move on, but ultimately he’s still in love with her.

Tate, man do I love the girl. She has a wicked inner strength and she gave as good as she got. Jared being back shakes her to the core but this isn’t the Tate from before. She more vulnerable in some ways, yet she’s stronger, bolder, and more determined. She has her future set and for once she’s truly making decisions for her. She’s moved on; she’s happy, but comfortable. That spark and passion that only Jared could evoke, isn’t there. She doesn’t want to be hurt again and she’s happy being comfortable. As much as they both try to, there is no denying that they still love one another. Jared knows he wants her back, he’s tired of hurting her, but things have changed. Tate doesn’t know if she should let Jared let Jared back and if she does, would she ever be able to trust him again?

“Everything flooded back. Every breath, every kiss, every smile, every tear, everything about her was mine.”

Reading this book was bittersweet, but this story was absolutely phenomenal. Penelope Douglas is a fantastic writer and you could feel the heart and emotions she brought to this story and these characters. As much as it hurt to see them apart, it was necessary for their personal growth. I commend Ms. Douglas for being bold enough to truly take their story in the direction that real and honest. They depended on another so much but they needed to be able to be as strong apart, as they were when they were together. I loved seeing their spark and the push and pull that brought out of each other. Seeing Maddoc, Fallon, Jax, and Juliet, all together again made me so happy. I’m so sad to these characters go but this was a perfect end to this amazing series.

“Everything else may change, but never the way I love you.”
