Rancher Destry Reeves is your typical country boy; he believes in hard work and the easy life. None of which he recognises in Amelia Highsmith.
When a chance encounter involving a cow, a truck and a dark Texan night puts the two on a collision course, it's not long before the fireworks begin and the simple life is turned upside down.
The last thing Amelia expects is for a brute of a cowboy to get in the way of her new life. She's left behind a world of high class dinners and city lights in an effort to escape a life she never wanted. Amelia finds herself in a world so far removed from home that it becomes impossible to break free without finding herself first.
Drawn together by an inexplicable attraction, Destry and Amelia must decide if such an unlikely pairing can ever survive.
Amelia Highsmith, brought up in a world of lavishness and people who don’t give a damn about anything other than upping their social standing. Her whole life she’s been told what to wear, how to act, and recently, who to love. But that’s not Amelia, it never has been, and if she has anything to say about it, it never will be.
When the ultimate betrayal gives her a chance to escape her pretentious lifestyle, Amelia takes off in her car….and directly into a tree. After crashing her car and attempting to beat up a cow…literally…the Reeve’s brother’s come to her rescue. But one brother in particular ends up saving her from more than just being stranded on the side of the road.
Destry Reeve’s is your typical cowboy. Sexy as sin, believes in hard work, and loves his family something fierce. When Amelia quite literally crashes into his life, Destry does everything he can to keep himself from falling for yet another “city girl”. But his attempts are absolutely futile as soon as he realizes she may have been brought up a city girl, but she’s ‘country’ to the bone.
“This is where you belong. You’re a country girl through and through. You fit here, darlin’. You fit me.”
What a sweet talking son-of-a-gun Destry is! GAH! I absolutely loved him. There’s just something so absolutely sexy about a strong southern man, who uses his manners during the day, and completely abandons them at night…hehe if you know what I mean.
Stark writes up some amazing men, and Destry is no exception! He’s strong and gentle. He’s amazingly sweet, and ridiculously hard headed. He’s beautiful both in appearance and in heart. He’s a walking contradiction. He’s the best of both worlds.
Amelia is something else. She was raised based entirely on superficial values. While her parents and sister are perfectly okay with life they all lead, Amelia isn’t so sure. While she knows that the lifestyle she’s leaving behind isn’t one she wants to be a part of anymore, she’s never known any other way of life. She knows she doesn’t want to be apart of her parents materialistic world anymore, but she has to learn who she is before she can decide what type of life she wants live from here on out.
And that’s exactly what she does when Destry and his family take her in. In the short amount of time she spends on Destry’s family’s ranch, Amelia realizes that she’s not only fallen in love with Destry, but has also fallen in love with the type of life the Reeve’s family lives: a life full of value that has nothing to do with money.
After a misunderstanding that tears Destry and Amelia apart, they’re able to face their past and put their demons to rest.
Lola Stark knows how to weave a good story, and this one had me absolutely hooked! I picked it up and wasn’t able to put it down. I finished it in like three hours flat! It was a cute, sweet, short read, and I absolutely recommend it to everyone! I fell in love with Stark’s work in the Needle’s Kiss series, and am still hooked after reading Destry!
And that epilogue! Holy hell, can you say plot twist??????
“‘Melia.” A light kiss on my shoulder had me stepping from complete sleep to eyes closed not wanting to wake up. I loved when I had these types of dreams. Destry touching me, his soft gentle lips touching my skin. “‘Melia, darlin’. Time to wake up.” His voice sounded so real, but then it always did. I snuggled deeper into the blankets and sighed. Only when I moved my hands to grab the pillow I always tucked up against me, did I realize I wasn’t dreaming. I slowly cracked an eye and was greeted with a glorious naked—from the waist up—Destry. His hair ruffled from sleep.
“Mmmm.” Best non-dream ever,” I quietly mumbled, smiling to myself. That earned me a chuckle and another soft kiss this time to my forehead.
“Time to get up, sleeping beauty.” He moved to his knees and I noticed his jeans weren’t buttoned. The happy trail that I’d taken my time following the night before caught my eyes, and I all but eye raped his toned stomach.
“Commando in the morning might be the best thing in the world.” I yawned, stretching out my sore muscles. We’d cuddled under the stars all night making good use of the food I’d packed, and eventually fell asleep in the back of the truck. “Cum gutters are pretty high up there too,” I smiled sleepily.
“Cum gutters?” he asked with a short laugh, handing me my clothes he’d obviously gathered up at some point.
“Mhmm.” I ran the tip of my finger along the clearly defined V muscles that ran from the top of his hips and disappeared into his jeans. “Cum gutters.” Tapping the skin there, I slowly sat up, watching him shake his head and smirk.
