From the New York Times Bestselling author of Stepbrother Dearest, comes a friends-to-lovers story of longing, passion, betrayal and redemption...with a twist that will rip your heart out.

Skylar was my best friend, but I secretly pined for her. One thing after another kept us apart, and I've spent the last decade in fear of losing her forever.

First, it was the cancer, but she survived only to face the unthinkable at my hands. Because of me, she left town. For years, I thought I'd never see her again.

But now she's back...and living with him.

I don't deserve her after everything I've put her through, but I can't live without her. This is my last chance because she's about to make the biggest mistake of her life. I can see it her eyes: she doesn't love him. She still loves me...which is why I have to stop her before it's too late.

My Skylar is a STANDALONE story of 99,000 words and a companion to the novel, Jake Undone. It does NOT need to be read in conjunction with any other book.

This book is recommended for readers over the age of 18 due to strong language and explicit sexual content.

I had previously read (and loved) Penelope Wards previous books in her Gemini series so when I saw she had a new book coming out, I literally giggled like a school girl!

I am not sure where to even being with my review. I was truly left speechless and I know that no matter what I say in my review, it will not be enough to convey how wonderful this book is. I will consider it a victory if I’m able to write this review without shedding a few tears along the way.

The story was so well written that I was immediately captivated with Mitch and Skylar’s story. The book begins in present day with Mitch watching Skylar from the shadows making the reader instantly curious about what brought these two adults to this point. We are then transported back 15 years and taken on a heartfelt journey friendship, devotion, and everlasting love.

Skylar (10) meets Mitch (11) one summer afternoon when he’s visiting his grandmother. They immediately form an unquestionable friendship. It isn’t until a chance encounter 5 year later that Skylar and Mitch are reunited. Their friendship picks up right where it left off until both start to see the other as something more. It seems just when both have found the courage to admit they want more than friendship, tragedy strikes. This becomes the catalyst that, over the next 10 years, puts the human spirit to its truest test.

“That’s the thing about true love. It can rise from the ashes because at it’s source, it’s indestructible. Layers can be stripped away and lost, but it you’re lucky enough to find them again and put them back together, the end result is stronger than ever.”

What I think I love most about Penelope’s writing is that she pushes the envelope. Although ultimately a story of reunited love, there are so many unique elements that make it stand out among all other books I have read. Her books (past & current books) bring into light issues others might shy away from: cancer, autism, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.  I think it is in part, those components that makes the story that much more real and authentic.

I takes an incredibly talented writer to create a story that could affect the readers on so many levels. Witnessing the interaction between Mitch and Skylar, you feel the overwhelming emotion –  their pain becomes your pain, their loss becomes your loss and ultimately, their love.

Since being lucky enough to receive an ARC of My Skylar, I have read the book not once, but twice, and I have no doubt I will read it again someday. It is by far, one of the best romance novels I have read.
