Review
“Love is sacrifice…”
November 9 was like a breath of fresh air for me. It’s been a long time since I’ve finished a book in one sitting. I couldn’t put this book down and honestly I didn’t want to. I just didn’t want it to end! This was the sort of novel that peaks your interest early on and before you know it you’re consumed by the entire story. Fallon and Ben’s story was a sweet and emotional journey that was full of humor, love, self- discovery, and the many plot twists of life.
I have loved Colleen Hoover’s work from the very beginning but while I liked her last two novels, I just didn’t connect with them on an emotional level. So I went into November 9 with no real expectations. November 9 was so different than I anticipated. It was different from any of her previous stories and I was so emotionally invested with these characters and their story.
“One of the things I always try to remind myself is that everyone has scars…..The only difference is that mine are visible and most people’s aren’t.”
Fallon and Ben meet by chance when they are both 18. The day is November 9 and it’s also the anniversary of the day that changed Fallon’s life and her career as an actress. It’s the day Fallon has come to dread each year but this year was different. Fallon decided to move from California to New York to peruse her acting career.
Even though Fallon was moving across the country the two end up spending the entire day together. Yes, they barely knew each other but something just clicked between them. They had the same humor and they had such a fun and witty banter between one another. I couldn’t help but like these two. Fallon had her insecurities but she also had an amazing strength and beauty. I loved her quick wit and the ability to speak her mind. Ben was so different from her and maybe that’s why they clicked. Ben was fun and easy going and as an aspiring writer, he had this wonderful way with words. The things he would say, his level of honesty and intensity, and just the ways he would complement Fallon, it just made it easy for me to fall for him.
After their initial meeting I wanted Fallon and Ben together. There was just something about them that felt right. Fallon became a muse for Ben and he even promises to write a novel on their story. There is an undeniable connection but the two decide not to immediately peruse a relationship. They come up with the plan to meet on November 9, each year for the next 5 years, and pick up where they left off. The catch is that, they won’t have any communication during the year. I thought the way this element was handled was so unique. I loved how the story was fleshed out, without being over the top. I found myself anticipating each year they would get together. Each year things in their life changed and certain plot twists threatened their possible happily ever after.
“And yes, you have scars. But anyone who sees your scars before they see you doesn’t deserve you.”
The yearning, the anticipation, the humor, and the effortless connection, truly had me falling for this story and these characters. Ms. Hoover did a brilliant job of capturing the depth and emotion in this novel and it came through on each page.
Praise for November 9
“November 9 is yet another breathtaking novel by Colleen Hoover that’s full of blushing, gushing, and heartache. I loved every page and breathed in every beautiful word.”
