Haley Martin is no stranger to loss. One tragic event takes her entire family, leaving lingering nightmares to torment her at every turn. She decides the only way to let go of those nightmares is to literally move away from all that is familiar. Boarding a Greyhound bus, she leaves behind her past filled with heartbreak and misery, in hopes of starting a new life.

By accident she meets Kyler King, a beautiful young man with a tragic past as well. He has no interest in settling down with anyone. With a reputation as being emotionally unattainable, he uses this façade to hide the burdens he bears every day.

As Kyler and Haley’s physical attraction becomes deeper, the secrets they have kept hidden threaten to surface. An unannounced visitor causes their pasts to collide with their present. Will their secrets prove to be too big of an obstacle, hindering their happily ever after, or will letting go be the key that locks their bond forever?

Warning: This book is intended for readers 17+ due to explicit language and sexual encounters.

Nacole Stayton has hit the mark with her debut novel. Kyler and Haley’s story is sweet, funny and heartbreaking all in one breath. Their journey is not an easy one but Nacole really lets you feel that without it being overly heavy. The story is fast paced, but does not leave feeling as if you missed something. I really enjoyed the way she balanced internal dialogue, the dialogue between characters and Haley’s flashbacks. The story is told from Haley’s POV but it did not take away from my understanding of Kyler’s struggle.

Haley Martin is a spunky, smart ass Jersey girl that knows how to stand up for herself. After suffering a tragic loss, she decides to leave New Jersey to transfer to Alabama for her second year of college. Without a word, she leaves behind her high school sweetheart/best friend and all the things she has been using to numb her pain.

“I have to keep hope that maybe one day, in the not so distant future that I’ll be able to simply think about my awful past and it won’t make my stomach churn. Hope is all I have creating my pathway for this new journey.”

Haley is a character I really enjoyed and loved. It doesn’t hurt that I am a Jersey girl too! 🙂 You understand her pain early on and get why she wants to be anybody else, other than the girl she was in Jersey. Her roommate, Lucy, was one of my favorite secondary characters. She really added a much needed fun factor to the story and helped Haley heal.

Kyler King is your sexy, southern bad boy with his own set of demons he is trying to avoid.

“Excuse me miss,” the gorgeous sandy blonde haired, blue-eyed gift from God says as he brushes by me without a second glance. If all of the men in this town look like him, I am going to love it here.”

Haley and Kyler don’t want to like each other, but the bond and attraction they feel is undeniable. They finally let their emotional walls down and learn they have more in common than they ever thought. Nothing about their relationship is easy and just when things seem to be looking up, Haley’s 21st birthday throws them a new set of issues and twists. I really wanted them to find their happiness.

The Upside of Letting Go is a nice summer read you should definitely pick up. It truly is a story of two lost, young souls that find much deserved happiness after they learn that sometimes the best thing to do is “just let go.” Haley and Kyler are easy to fall in love with and you will be rooting for them the whole way.
